Zahrina - the Accidental Artist
Artist Statement
My inspiration comes from the beauty of the atmosphere — the light and its connection with our earth, flora and fauna.
Every time I look at what nature is presenting in front of me, the light reflecting on our ocean, and mountains, seductive with the constant movement of the atmosphere, I am reminded that life is constantly shifting and never stagnant. I work in oil and graphite, using many layers of glazes to achieve the luminosity of the atmospheric quality in my work. I also work wet on wet and use drips to create texture and atmosphere, which alludes to what’s beneath the surface. Layers and layers of paint are applied on the canvas before I even know how the image will present itself in its final form.
My paintings ask viewers to step into an ethereal world of possibility, mystery, magic, and atmosphere and be transported through colour, light, and texture.
Artist Bio
Zahrina grew up in a family of creatives, nurturers and foodies. From an early age, she was as comfortable with a spatula as much as holding a camera. Receiving her first tiny paint palette and her first toy camera at age five, she was captivated by the beautiful colours in her paint box and the brilliant vegetables her mum and dad transformed into delicious, comforting curries.
Today, Zahrina expresses her love for art and cooking as a Sydney painter, brand artisan, and medium. She is a best-selling author of 5 x books, a multi-award-winning business owner, and a keynote speaker. She finds making art, meditating and creative cooking are opportunities to be fully present in life. To be inspired by nature. To be so absorbed in tasks that time expands. Zahrina experiences working in her studio in Northbridge, Sydney as an immersion into a vibrant, reverent, tactile, visual world.
Original oil paintings, limited edition prints, and mixed-media work are in private collections in Australia, the USA, and abroad.
